A brief introduction of XuZhou :
In the north of Jiangsu, Xuzhou is one of China's best showcases for the art, archaeology and history of the Han Dynasty, China's first great dynasty. The Han Dynasty was contemporaneous with the Roman empire in the West, and Xuzhou was home to a succession of its most important princes and lords. Hoping to enter the afterlife in appropriate splendor and pomp, they constructed many massive tombs around the city, and had them adorned with gold and jade treasures, and decorated with finely carved reliefs, and even armies of terracotta warriors like those in Xi'an! These monumental underground tomb complexes are now open to visitors, and their treasures are displayed in the city's excellent archaeological museum, while another gallery showcases their superb stone reliefs. Xuzhou's own hundreds of terracotta warriors are also quite impressive - although smaller than their "cousins" in Xi'an, they are just as finely crafted and still stand at attention in battle formation as they have for over twenty centuries. Xuzhou's cuisine is itself a reason to visit - the city has a distinctive hearty and delicious cuisine based on lamb generously seasoned with cilantro and chili. |
