1842年LGC成立，1996年開始私有化，經過12年的發展，員工已從私有化時的200名增加到1400名，實驗室數目也在不斷增加，LGC在英國設有8個分支機構，實驗室從1個增加到了12個，在德國已經有7個，在印度有4個。目前LGC每年檢測的樣品數達幾百萬個。
政府的信賴、嚴格的法規是LGC生存與發展之本。雖然LGC已經私有化，但是鑒于一直以來的實力和優良表現，LGC一直深受英國政府信賴，因此LGC總是被政府委以重任。例如，政府發現消費者抵制轉基因食品，就會規定，含有轉基因成分的食品必須在標簽上標注轉基因成分的含量，如含量超標但未標注，一旦被查處就要受到懲罰，具體的含量判斷由LGC負責檢測。當然，LGC也會參與政府招標，中標后承擔一些檢測工作。
盡管如此，LGC并不滿足政府提供的業務，作為私有化的公司，LGC一直在通過自己的努力積極開拓其他業務。如針對印度制藥公司較多的情況，我們在印度設有專門生產藥品雜質標準品的工廠。一些生產高純度藥品的制藥公司會購買我們的標準品，檢測藥品中的雜質，也會因使用了LGC高級雜質標準品，使其檢測報告具有極高的權威性。
